Fertility and Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used in China for fertility and is now often prescribed by fertility specialists in conjunction with IVF.  But, what are the factors that contribute to fertility, and what things should you know in order to help your chances of conceiving?  For a woman, having a healthy weight will allow her to maintain optimal ovarian function and stable hormone levels.  Issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome and thyroid issues are often barriers to a woman’s fertility.  Acupuncture assists an individual in maintaining their overall health, but when focused on healing the reproductive system, it can assist with balancing hormone levels and reduce the stress placed on the body during the fertility process.  The most common issues that can inhibit a woman from becoming pregnant are endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and thyroid issues such as hypothyroid or hyperthyroidism.  Using both acupuncture and herbs maximizes the chances of conceiving and used throughout a pregnancy, it can optimize chances of a healthy pregnancy.  Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine also assists with male reproductive issues such as low sperm count or impaired motility.  For a couple in the midst of trying to bring a new life into the world, the issues surrounding fertility can be difficult.  Being open to communicating throughout the process creates stronger bonds and also allows for a supportive atmosphere on both ends.  Choosing health care providers that are knowledgeable and that you trust is important to the process in order to know all your options.
